ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Daily life demands constant making judgments or decisions. Some of those decisions may be more or less complex depending on ethical, social, historical and political context of social factors and the interaction of these factors with subjects who judge. The aim of this article is to show how Functional Theory of Cognition allows detailed cognitive decision making process analysis, in which they operate: the valuation of stimuli, integration of psychological representation of these stimuli and finally, explicit answer. This process of judgment meets three rules: addition, multiplication, average, for observing the functions that are generated between the factors involved in decisions and issuing a judgment. This theory has had important applications in the areas of clinical psychology and health, political psychology, sports psychology and developmental psychology, areas in which the paper presents the most relevant findings.

ABSTRACT

Faces and bodies are typically seen together in most social interactions, rendering probable that facial and bodily expressions are perceived and eventually processed simultaneously. The methodology of Information Integration Theory and Functional Measurement was used here to address the following questions: Under what rules do facial and bodily information integrate in judgments over different dimensions of so-called basic and self-conscious emotions? How does relative importance of face and body vary across emotions and judgment dimensions? Does the relative importance of face and body afford a basis for distinguishing between basic and self-conscious emotions? Three basic (happiness, anger, sadness) and two social self-conscious emotions (shame and pride) were considered in this study. Manipulated factors were 3-D realistic facial expressions (varied across 5 levels of intensity) and synthetic 3-D realistic body postures (3 levels of intensity). Different groups of participants judged expressed intensity, valence, or arousal of the combined presentations of face and body, meaning that judgment dimension was varied between-subjects. With the exception of arousal judgments, averaging was the predominant integration rule. Relative importance of face and body was found to vary as a function of judgment dimension, specific emotions and, for judgments of arousal only, type of emotion (basic versus self-conscious).

ABSTRACT

The unification of two major approaches to moral judgment is the purpose of the present approach. Kohlberg's well-known stage theory assumes a sequence of discrete stages that underlie all moral judgment. Stage theory recognizes the problem of integrating considerations but gives no way to solve such integration, even with information from any one stage. And, of course, the stage concept denies any significant integration from different stages. Thus, research on moral judgment needs to study the integration problem which can be tested within Anderson's theory of information integration. The main purpose of the present study was to extend this unificationist approach to the issue of sexual morality. A novel task presents information from two very different stages. The results showed that in contrast to discreteness the stage informers were positively correlated in punishment judgments of both genders about consensual sex of juveniles. Furthermore, the subjects integrated considerations from those very different stages also in contrast to the hypothesis that only a single stage was operative at any time.

ABSTRACT

Hormone decline is common to all women during aging and, associated with other factors, leads to cognitive impairment. Its replacement enhances cognitive performance, but not all women present a clinical and family or personal history that justifies its use, mainly women with a history of cancer. The aim of this study was to determine whether a daily oral dose of 80 mg of isoflavone extract for 4 months can produce benefits in women with low hormone levels, contributing to improvement in cognitive aspects. The sample comprised 50- to 65-year-old women whose menstruation had ceased at least 1 year before and who had not undergone hormone replacement. The volunteers were allocated to two groups of 19 individuals each, i.e., isoflavone and placebo. There was a weak correlation between menopause duration and low performance in the capacity to manipulate information (central executive). We observed an increase in the capacity to integrate information in the group treated with isoflavone, but no improvement in the capacity to form new memories. We did not observe differences between groups in terms of signs and symptoms suggestive of depression according to the Geriatric Depression Scale. Our results point to a possible beneficial effect of isoflavone on some abilities of the central executive. These effects could also contribute to minimizing the impact of memory impairment. Further research based on controlled clinical trials is necessary to reach consistent conclusions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: For disease prevention and health promotion, it is important that individual health information is managed continuously and can be retrieved easily when necessary. We propose a model for integrated management of diverse individual health information that is generated and managed in heterogeneous Health Information System(HIS)s at hospitals or health centers. METHODS: We use XML and relational database together to represent the health information structurally and manage it flexibly. In order to show the effectiveness of our method, we developed a prototype of Intermediate System for integration and analysed the result. RESULTS: The Intermediate System for integration provides the schema of health information, represents the information in forms of XML strings by the subjects, and stores each XML string as one field of relational database. In each heterogeneous HIS, there is an adaptor that transforms the health information into XML according to the schema. The messages for transmission between each HIS and Intermediate System are represented in XML. CONCLUSION: The experimental study shows that using relational database and XML together provides a flexible, extensible and structured way of representing complex, dynamic, structurally-variant and large-scale information, on the premise that the database tables are partitioned or distributed according to the status of server.

ABSTRACT

One important problem of regional information system in healthcare is the access to electronic patient records across healthcare institute boundaries. The Integrating Healthcare Enterprise initiatively proposes the integration profile of the retrieve information for display that enables a user to retrieve and display patients' related documents cross hospitals. The middleware is added to HIS to realize the cross-hospital data access to clinical information with access authorization and privacy regulations. Besides, the integration of cross-hospital patients' clinical information is achieved based on the realization of Patient ID protocol in different systems.
